Stolen Light
Raze cradled the bottle of pixie cider in her numb arms, even though sheâd emptied it with Merethyl during their draining sex. Itâd taken the turtle half a day to travel from Naunas in the east to Voltucique in the middle of the Calmest Abyss. Most of those hours had been dark, and the only light theyâd enjoyed had emanated from giant jellyfish.
Although, on the reef on the bottom of the ocean, Varda had erected tall lanterns which glowed light blue and pink. They attracted sharks and fish as if that had always been their intended purpose, not illuminating the area. No one knew what the king of oceans did on purpose or by accident.
High above them, two massive whales swam. Their calls echoed throughout Thylatserineâs soul. The sharks racing through the schools of fish were much faster, but the whales had a patient rhythm to their movements which whispered strength. They didnât have to rush anywhere. The world waited on them.
âVoltucique,â Merethyl murmured, hugged her, and pointed at luminous towers sparkling on the horizon. âYou ever been to the capital, Raze? Seems like you might have.â
âYup.â She scoured their cabin for the cork to the bottle, yet dropped it when she didnât see it. âCouple of times in recent years. Grew up in the guildhall, but never tell anyone that. Only results in more questions than I like.â
âYou were born in Voltucique?â
âI think...â Raze didnât know where sheâd been born. The elders in the Oath had told her theyâd found her on their doorstep, one day, and theyâd taken her in since theyâd had no choice. No one could leave an infant to fend for themselves. âDonât know, if Iâm honest, because how would I? Told me they didnât know, so I didnât ask.â
âArenât you curious where you came from?â Merethyl yawned, trembled, and put her enchanting figure on display exclusively for her eyes. âI know I would be, in your shoes. Iâd be someone else, because I would have spent years, decades, trying to discover my origin.â
âThe goddessâ¦â She best not tell Merethyl how the goddess of love had visited her in a dream to tell her about their shared future. If she divulged such information, she might lose the elf.
âGoddess?â Merethyl kissed her cheek.
âThis goddess talked to me in a dream, used a family name, but no idea how sheâd know it when my guild mothers and fathers didnât.â She smiled at Merethyl, pulled her closer, and tickled her until she smiled. âAmicier, doesnât ring a bell to me.â
âIt⦠it does to me. Not sure why, but I could ask around. I swear Iâve heard it somewhere, recently.â Merethyl burrowed down into the pillows, sighed. âWeâre going to arrive soon, yet I wish to stay in this bauble with you till I die.â
âBit nasty, if you ask me.â Raze rested her head on top of the elf hiding among pillows. âYou live thousands of years, and we donât get more than a hundred. Hundred and fifty, tops.
